[New York. Not his favorite place. Even less so when he had to ride the subway. Spike did his best to keep his head down and try not to think, an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth. Each shove of thronging New Yorkers made him a little number as he glanced down at the scrawled address over crumpled paper for the millionth time.

As he steps out onto the street, the Sun's almost down. Keeping his eyes on his boots, he pushes hands with chipping nail polish into his duster pockets, trying not to feel the last of its warmth on his face. He couldn't feel more out of place as he's looking up the nose of Petrelli Manor, keeping his eyes out for Peter. Steeling himself, he steps up on the lawn, half-expecting an aerial attack. Or maybe one from the side.]

[ After going inside to retrieve the keys to the unused car, Peter had hightailed it out of his childhood home, the place not inherently holding that much comfort for him. And anyway, he'd have an easier time looking out for Spike if he was waiting outside for him. At least that's what he told himself.

Sitting on the steps that led to the front door, Peter waited, on the lookout for any familiar passerby's. Once he saw who he was looking for, he pushed himself upright, starting the trek across their front yard. His own hands shoved in his pockets, he'd always felt exceedingly out of place here and his expression, everything about him, showed it. Making his way over to Spike, he sighs, more than a little familiar with the look the other man was giving the place. ]

Hey, Spike.

[He almost starts, which is stupid since he'd heard Peter before he even saw him. So when his voice came it really shouldn't have been a surprise. He must just be even more in his own head than usual.] Pete. [he says in greeting with a nod, still eyeing the house like it might grow teeth and eat him whole any second.]

[ Peter looks over his shoulder at the house before looking back to Spike, as if he himself is still surprised that the thing is standing. ] Told you it's big. It's even worse on the inside.

[That almost gets a snort, and his eyes flick back to Peter.] Did you get lost, growing up in there? [he gestures with his still unlit cigarette.]

[ With all seriousness, Peter's maybe a little too quick to respond. ] Couple times a week, at least.

[He does laugh, glad to have that tension broken. He's all too familiar with awkwardness, especially these days.] Your mum not home?

[ Peter smiles a little, however brief -- happy to be done with the initial icebreaker, before nodding. ] Yeah, she's out. Want to see the car, make sure it's cool enough?

Lead the way. If it's not I can still hotwire some poor sod's. [He's clearly joking, tucking his cigarette back in his pocket.]

[ Peter just shakes his head, turning on the spot and leading Spike back up the overly long driveway. ] It might need to warm up a little, can't remember the last time it was run.

I'm never in a hurry to go see Angel, so don't worry about it. [Despite not knowing where he's going, he's walking slightly ahead of Peter.]

[ Peter has no idea how he always ends up following someone else even when he's leading the way, but the garage is just a little ways ahead, and it's not as if he minds. ] I thought you were going just to get away for awhile?

I am. [He risks a glance to Peter before his gaze redirects to his feet.] Truth is, mate, starting to think I'm not cut so much for all this--living above the surface, roommates. Thing.

Maybe you just need different roommates. [ He chances a look over at Spike, nearly apologetic. But he's prejudiced and he knows it, clearing his throat as he enters the code to open up one of the garage doors. ]

Yeah, well. That's the least of my worries right now. [He takes a breath to clear his head, but he doesn't have any left when he sees the car anyway.] This is your old lady's? [He's making his way to it like a magnet, almost afraid to touch.]

[ Peter snorts, giving the black Aston Martin an almost amused look. ] Yeah, it's my mom's. She's big on appearances.

She put an ejector seat in here too? [All the shit with Sylar and Angel slips from his mind when he sets his eyes on this car. Has he ever actually been lent a car? That would be a no. He's still a little out of it for that reason.]

Wouldn't surprise me. [ Peter contently stands by and lets Spike stare, too amused by his reaction. ] Always wondered what that button did..

Do you have the keys? [Spike holds out a hand to Peter, still unwilling to look away.]

[ Since he's not even looking, Peter drops the keys into his hand, grinning to himself. ] There you go.

[He catches them, grinning too.] Get in, we'll take her for a jog to warm her up.

Yeah, sure-- why not. [ He had no idea that he'd get so much of a kick out of just letting Spike borrow his mom's car. But he was, if only because Spike seemed so excited about it. Hand on the door handle, he waits for Spike to open up the car. ]

[Pressing the button to release the doors, he slides into the driver's seat, hands running along the wheel as if he still can't believe this is real. Sure enough, it takes a few minutes to start, and when it does, he lets her sit a few minutes.] You talk to Claire?

[ Settling down into the passenger side seat, Peter breaths a sigh of relief when the car finally starts. Stretching out comfortaby, he looks over at Spike, grimacing faintly. ] Yeah. She's not exactly happy with me at the moment.

Yeah, you and me both. What'd you do?

I didn't come save her. Even though she always tells me she doesn't want me to.
